Black History Month Concert in Ridgefield Features Prominent Young Artists

Rashaan Allwood will be one of three featured artists at St. Stephen’s Concert for Black History Month, Monday, Feb. 24, at 7:30. The church is located at 351 Main St. in Ridgefield.

As a pianist, organist and harpsichordist, Mr. Allwood has appeared with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal, Houston Civic Symphony and the University of Toronto’s Collegium Musicum. He has also performed across Europe, including at St. Paul's Cathedral in London, St. Nikolai Kierke in Leipzig, and St. Pierre’s Cathedral in Geneva. In 2017 he was listed as one of CBC's “30 under 30” classical musicians.

The Concert for Black History Month will highlight contributions of black musicians and composers and will feature rarely heard classical works by African American composers. It will also feature a variety of musical styles, in addition to classical, that are reflected in the African American heritage, including selections from Scott Joplin and Erroll Garner. Organ and piano works will intersperse sacred vocal works and spiritual arrangements.

Two other prominent young artists will perform with Mr. Allwood: baritone Caleb Wright, who appeared this past summer at the St. Stephen’s Jazz Vespers, and Alcee Chriss III, music minister at the church.

Suggested donation is $20.
