Interactive Hymn Sing for the Ridgefield Community Features Virtual Choir and Young Choristers

In the words of the Rev. Whitney Altopp, rector of St. Stephen’s Church, “We can’t sing together in the church, but we can sing together wherever we are.” To that end, St. Stephen’s will stream a hymn sing on Pentecost Sunday, May 31, at 4 p.m. All are welcome to participate. Go to www.ststephensridgefield.org to be directed to the streaming link. Words to hymns will be scrolled on the screen.

The St. Stephen’s Choir will sing popular hymns and anthems virtually – thanks to the miracle of technology – as they have for regular church services during the pandemic. This has enabled a former choir member, who had recently moved to England, and another, who has been in Florida, to participate. Also appearing will be the St. Stephen’s Choristers of young singers, who will present the spiritual “This Little Light of Mine.” Rev. Altopp, an accomplished singer as well as preacher, will sing two duets with Thomas Carr, bass.

Alcee Chriss, the church’s minister of music, will open the concert with an organ voluntary to honor the Class of 2020: Edward Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstances,” a mainstay of commencement ceremonies. He will close the event with an organ voluntary by Marcel Dupre, “Resurrection” from Symphonie Passion.

In keeping with Pentecost, the music will celebrate the Holy Spirit. Dr. Chriss noted that in the Gospel of John, Jesus says, "It is the Spirit who gives life, the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life."
