Ridgefield PRIDE and LOVE are not Canceled

PRIDE and LOVE are not Canceled

This June marks the 50th anniversary of the Pride March in NYC. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic the NYC march, as well as many others throughout the country, have been canceled. Nevertheless, a pandemic cannot subdue the vibrant expression of love which the 4 million marchers would usually exude throughout the 6-mile parade. Now, participants are called to demonstrate their support and devotion to the cause in other ways.

This year Pride Month will continue online as the NYC Pride website notes “the future is virtual” after all. NYC Pride’s main event will be a special broadcast in partnership with ABC from 12 pm to 2 pm on Sunday, June 28th – the day which the march would have taken place. This event honors front-line workers as well as leaders in the LGBTQIA+ community including Dan Levy, The Ali Forney Center, Yanzi Peng, and Victoria Cruz – the Grand Marshals of the event. Locally, towns in Connecticut are maintaining tentative schedules for Pride Month events. In Ridgefield, celebrations have not yet been completely canceled but rather postponed for a later date. Nevertheless, you will soon see Pride banners hung around town to commemorate the month. Moreover, in light of recent events, the organization has stated that they “do not want to, in any way, take attention away from the protests. Equality is important for all!”

When the celebration is able to occur, the event is sure to be a fun one consisting of a parade, music, games, crafts, and information on support groups and ways to aid the LGBTQ+ community here in Ridgefield.
