Ridgefield Continuing Ed Presents English History: The Hanoverians Take the English Throne

The Germans are Coming: Hanoverians Take the English Throne is a Ridgefield Continuing Education history seminar on Zoom, led by veteran history teacher, Nancy Maxwell that will offer insights into the character, lifestyle, and personalities of the first three Georges: the impact of their reigns on English history, while at the same time focusing on their German lands. When Queen Anne died in 1714 there was no direct heir to the throne of England.

Concerned that the Catholic Stuarts might try to regain power, the Parliament took measures to ensure a smooth transference of the crown to Anne’s nearest legitimate Protestant relative, George of Hanover who was enjoying a life of gambling and hunting (and ruling!) in his German state. Yet in 1714, at age 54, George sailed for England, and began a new royal line.

The Whig party welcomed George I and gained control of the government. Later, when George II succeeded to the throne and continued to focus on his German lands, led England into two European wars and left her on the verge of disaster. This three-session class is on Tuesday, June 8, 15 and 22 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Zoom. Cost is $55. Ridgefield seniors age 62 and over pay $44.   Advance registration required.
