Morgan Library Curator Speaks at Ridgefield Library, Part of ARTalks Series

Ridgefield Library's ARTalks series will kick off in the Ridgefield Library’s Main Program Room on Sunday, October 17th at 2:00 p.m., with Morgan Library and Museum curator Dr. Daria Rose Foner.

Her ARTalk is titled, Belle da Costa Greene: The Woman Who Made the Morgan Library. Dr. Foner will focus on Greene (1879-1950) as one of the greatest librarian-scholars of the twentieth century. She was initially hired as J. Pierpont Morgan’s private librarian and later became the Morgan Library’s inaugural director when it opened as a public research institution in 1924. Dr. Foner traces Greene’s life story from its origins in an upper-middle-class African-American community in Washington D.C. to her ascension to the pinnacle of her profession and explores how the racial barriers of Jim Crow America led Greene, her mother, and her siblings to “pass” as white.

Dr. Daria Rose Foner is the Research Associate to the Director at the Morgan Library & Museum in New York and is also Co-Director of the Belle Greene – Bernard Berenson letters project. The next two ARTalks will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 14 and Sunday, December 5. This ARTalk is titled, Seize the Light: A Two-Part History of Photography with Professor of Art and Design, Thomas Brenner.

The Library's ARTalk series is dedicated to exploring the creative process through lectures, films, and workshops that focus on art, architecture, and design. ARTalks are co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Library, Ridgefield Guild of Artists and, in part, The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art.

Please note: all patrons must wear masks that cover nose and mouth at all times while in the Library, regardless of vaccination status, per the current protocol of the Town of Ridgefield. Masks must conform to current CDC recommendations.
