FREE Community Event: Diversity Film Screening of Award-Winning Movie, Dear White People, at The Ridgefield Playhouse on June 19

In recognition of Juneteenth and African-American Heritage, The Ridgefield Playhouse will be offering a FREE screening of the satirical drama, Dear White People, on June 19, 2022 at 7:30pm, as part of the Aquarion Water Company Diversity Film Series.

Written, directed and co-produced by Justin Simien, the film follows four young African-American college students as they navigate a confused and messy landscape of bias, injustice, activism, and politics on campus. Starring Tyler James Williams, Tessa Thompson, Kyle Gallner, Teyonah Parris, Brandon P. Bell, Brittany Curran and Dennis Haysbert, the students are faced with the hypocrisy and absurdities of a modern “post-racial” society.

Simien spent five years writing the film and launched a campaign which raised a surprising $40,000. In true grassroots indie-film fashion, Simien shot the film himself with a Red Epic digital camera. Dear White People quickly grabbed the attention of many, profiting at the box office, and winning Indiewire’s Project of the Year title among other accolades and awards. A Netflix Series based on the movie was later released in 2017. This film is also part of the Cohen and Wolf P.C. Movie Series. The media sponsor for this event is WLAD (94.1FM/800AM).

The bonus content for DEAR WHITE PEOPLE will consist of an interview led by entertainment reporter Cheryl Washington and can be seen following the screening in the theater or on The Ridgefield Playhouse YouTube channel.

To reserve your FREE tickets, go online at www.ridgefieldplayhouse.org or, you can visit or call the box office (203) 438-5795.  The Ridgefield Playhouse is a non-profit performing arts center located at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street, Ridgefield, CT and is committed to keeping the arts alive and available to all.
