Dr. Sanjay K. Gupta spoke at Laurel Ridge Today

Celebrating Rehabilitation

As part of National Rehabilitation Awareness week, Dr. Sanjay K. Gupta, board-certified orthopedic surgeon of Orthopaedic Specialists of CT, spoke at Laurel Ridge Health Care Center on Wed., Sept 18th about, 'Is Joint Replacement Right for You?'

Dr. Gupta discussed surgical and non-surgical treatment options for joint conditions and when joint replacement is the right choice. This also included the latest developments, benefits, risks, and precautions in hip and knee surgery, particularly when it comes to choosing materials for the implant. Before considering surgery, patients may try other methods of treatment, such as exercise, walking aids, and medications. Arthritic pain levels is one of the main reasons that patients seek out medical intervention.

The typical first recourse is over-the-counter medications to alleviate the pain. If that is not as effective over time, physicians may prescribe non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) or recommend knee injections of cortisone to help with pain management. Certain exercises can be prescribed to strengthen muscles that support the hips and knees. If you are suffering with arthritis, hip pain, stiffness and limited hip movement, you encouraged to consult with your physicians to determine what is right for you.

Dr. Gupta, who is a Ridgefield resident, is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with Orthopaedic Specialists of CT located in Brookfield. He is also the Co-Director of the Joint Replacement Program at Danbury Hospital. His clinical interest is in treating hip and knee arthritis in all age groups, pain management, minimally invasive total joint replacement, and revision hip and knee replacement. He is one of the few orthopedic surgeons who specialize in hip resurfacing in United States.
