Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra Season: Amazing Music, Amazing People!

Orchestra Season: Amazing Music, Amazing People!

The Ridgefield Symphony Orchestra’s 2017-2018 season packs much into four exciting performances featuring acclaimed conductors and guest soloists with international reputations. Music from the classical, romantic, twentieth century and contemporary periods are represented in this season’s repertoire. The concerts take place on October 7th, December 2nd, March 17th and May 5th. The first two and the final concert of the season will be held at Anne S. Richardson Auditorium at Ridgefield High School. The March concert will be held at the Ridgefield Playhouse.  All performances begin at 8:00 PM, with pre-concert talks at 7:00 PM.

Each of the concerts feature a symphony or symphonic suite as a finale: Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, Mozart’s Symphony No. 41 and Franck’s Symphony in D minor. The soloist selections are beautiful and thrilling pieces in the repertoire which musicians aspire to perform: Elgar’s Concert for Cello, Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4, and Prokofiev’s Violin Concert No. 1. While the opening pieces of the concerts vary from a contemporary piece, Dawn, by award winning composer Paul Frucht, to a “winter suite” featuring selections by Prokofiev, Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov, to the dramatic Overture to Don Giovanni and finally Ravel’s sweeping Le Tombeau de Couperin – each shows off the orchestra's capabilities and superb musicianship.

The October, December and March concerts will be conducted by Yuga Cohler, Eric Mahl and John Cuk respectively with the May concert being conducted by the newly appointed RSO Music Director, to be announced in early January. Guest soloists are cellist Julian Schwarz, pianist Dmitri Novgorodsky and violinist Angelo Xiang Yu, with RSO concertmaster Jorge Avila performing as soloist for the final concert.

Concert tickets are $60, $45 and $25, with discounts available for seniors, student and group. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit the RSO website at ridgefieldsymphony.org or call the box office at (203) 438-3889.
