Insight Counseling's Jorgensen presents on teen health

Elizabeth Driscoll Jorgensen, CACD, Director of Insight Counseling LLC, presented in front her colleagues at a professional conference on rethinking teen’s health.

Jorgensen, a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, presented “How to Engage the Highly Resistant Adolescents in the Process of Treatment,” at the Newport Academy sponsored event. Her talk offered techniques on how to facilitate a more effective therapeutic relationship with teens. The theory she presented, Motivational Interviewing techniques, in conjunction with Self-Medication Theory, is incorporated in the highly successful programming at Insight Counseling.

"Self-medication of depression, anxiety, and underlying trauma are behind most addiction in teens and young adults. If we help them heal these issues they will be protected from relapse. There is hope for joyful recovery!" she explains.

Dr. Anita Chu, Medical Director of Insight Counseling, also attended the conference. “Liz is regarded as a wonderful speaker because of her ability to work with highly resistant adolescents and families. She is able to show other clinicians how to do that. It was evident at the conference, as a number of young therapists approached her after her presentation to talk with her.”

Jorgensen has 30 years’ experience as a psychotherapist, specializing in adolescent psychotherapy and substance abuse counseling. She is a nationally recognized expert in substance abuse counseling, engaging resistant teens and motivating them to change. She is also a consultant to independent schools and agencies and is a popular speaker on parenting pre-teens and teenagers. She has presented nationally, including at Harvard University and Dartmouth College. She is also a recipient of a Congressional Award for her work as an educator and community prevention activist. Liz worked for 18 years at Danbury Hospital, where she helped develop all the adolescent substance abuse and Dual Diagnosis programs. Liz is a gifted speaker and her parenting programs routinely receive outstanding reviews.

“Liz has a very clear understanding of the role of the psychiatrist in the clinical process and how important getting an accurate diagnosis is in driving correct treatment, of which medication is one (powerful) tool, but not the only one,” Dr. Chu says.

Dr. Chu is a Board-certified psychiatrist who graduated from Brown University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Neuroscience and received her medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.  Upon graduation, she received the Leah J. Dickstein Award for Leadership and Creativity, a national award given to one female graduating medical student from the Association of Women Psychiatrists. Dr. Chu has diverse training, including an internship at ABC News in New York City as part of the Medical Unit to promote medical journalism.  She has worked as a staff psychiatrist at Silver Hill Hospital in New Canaan, CT and for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.  She was also the Director of Psychiatric Medicine at High Watch Recovery Center in Kent, CT.
