Winter Weather Advisories Issued for Entire Region

Winter Weather Advisories are currently in effect for most of the region including:

Northern Fairfield-Northern
New Haven-Northern Middlesex Northern New London
Eastern Passaic
Western Bergen
Western Essex- Western Union-Rockland
Northern Westchester

Snow is expected to overspread the area this morning before transitioning to sleet, freezing rain, and rain from south to north.

A low-pressure system currently located over West Virginia is forecast to slowly intensify as the low moves to the northeast directly towards southern New England over the next several hours.  This low is forecast to move directly over our area this evening putting our state into a snow to mix to rain scenario.

This Morning: Snow spreading into the state from the southwest to northeast between 9:00 AM and 11:00 AM.  The snow may come down heavy at times for a few hours after it starts with temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 20's by noon and near 30 F at the coast.  No significant impact is expected on the morning rush hour.  The impact on late morning travel is expected to be minor to briefly moderate with a quick 1” – 2” coating of snow being deposited on roads by noon impacting the normally lighter midday traffic.

This Afternoon: Snow changing quickly to rain along the coast just after noon.  The snow is forecast to changeover quickly to sleet across most of the rest of the state by 2:00 PM.  The sleet is expected to continue for 1 - 2 hours before changing over to freezing rain by 4:00 PM in the Hartford area.  The sleet and some freezing rain may hold on longer in the NW and NE Hills thru the rush hour.

Total accumulations before the changeover are expected to range from 1" - 2" at the coast, 2” – 4”  in the Hartford area and up to 3" – 5” in the NW Hills.  A minor impact is expected on the afternoon rush hour in southern CT with wet roads.

In northern CT a minor impact is expected in the Hartford valley with slush on most roads.  A moderate impact may occur in the hills and valleys to the east and west of Hartford as colder air may allow the snow and sleet to stick to roads longer causing slick driving conditions.  Most locations should changeover to plain rain by 6:00 PM with temperatures rising into the 30’s across most of the state by early this evening.

This Evening: The rain may change back to wet snow from Northwest to Southeast for approximately 30 minutes before ending around 10:00 PM.  Some black ice can be expected to form overnight as standing water will freeze especially on any untreated roads.  Lows in the low to mid 20's.

The largest area of uncertainty remains in how fast the changeover to a mix will occur this afternoon and how much sleet and freezing rain will occur after the changeover.
