Dr. Verma: can acupuncture help me?

Dr. Verma-Dzik is the owner and founder of Ridgefield-based Fairfield Naturopathic Health. A board-certified Naturopathic Physician, Dr. Verma is also a certified medical acupuncturist who practices holistic medicine in the treatment of acute and chronic health conditions.

In this week’s segment, Dr. Verma talks about The Benefits of Acupuncture.

Have you ever been curious about acupuncture, but didn’t know enough about it and was too afraid to try?  There is quite a bit of research being conducted on the effects of acupuncture.  It is used as a treatment for a multitude of health conditions, including, anxiety, digestive conditions, menopause, infertility, pain, and as part of integrative therapy to cancer.  According to the World Health Organization, acupuncture is recognized as a treatment for more than 50 diseases.  Recognized by WHO for over 3 decades, acupuncture is a safe alternative medicine treatment.

From an oriental medicine perspective, the theory is that illness and disease occur when there is an imbalance in the flow of energy in the body, qi.   When needles are applied to points on the body where the energy flows, qi is rebalanced and health is restored. For a more western explanation, acupuncture treatment helps increase circulation, and boost our immune system by causing the release of chemicals that fight infection and provide healing actions.  It also activates the body’s own ability to heal by causing the release of endorphins within our bodies, which are our natural, built-in pain reducers.  The endorphins that are released not only help decrease pain, but also provide a feeling of euphoria, bringing a complete sense of calm to the body.  As for hormones, studies are showing more promising results that it can work on the level of the pituitary gland to help regulate hormone secretion.

As for side effects, there are none, especially when compared to the side effects that pharmaceuticals carry.

Is it painful?  It is definitely not painful.  The size of the needles cannot even be compared to the size of the needles you get during blood draws or vaccines.  Typically the needles are really thin, too thin to feel.  Some spots may feel more sensitive, so you may feel the needle go in.  But the sensation goes away.

Will you feel anything?  Of course, you should feel more relaxed, and, over time, you should feel better.  The only people acupuncture is not for are the trypanophobia, those who have a fear of needles.

So why not try it? Even if you do not have any particular health concerns, acupuncture is a relaxing treatment, both mentally and physically.
