Today at 10:00 am, Ridgefield High School students joined thousands of students and organizations across the country in a National School Walkout, honoring the 17 victims of the school shooting in Parkland, Florida that took place one month ago today. Today's walkout was spearheaded by organizers of the Women's March.
Ridgefield Police and reporters gathered outside of the school on a sun-filled but chilly morning awaiting the 10:00 hour when 98% of the school body would walk a Circle of Love in the name of the 17 people who lost their lives last month.
The walk down to Tiger Hollow and back took 17 minutes. Upon approaching the Stadium, walkers heard bells chime as each of the victims' names was read. Please watch our video of the walk by visiting our Facebook Page here.
Students who organized the Walkout carried posters with the words, "What Are Your Hopes & Dreams?"
Many students shared positive thoughts about today's Walkout. Here are just a few:
"Today was a day of remembrance as well as hope and positivity."
"It was super powerful that a great majority of our school came together and we were all able to walk...we were together on the bottom of Tiger Hollow to hear the bells and the names of the skids from the shooting."
Another walkout, founded and organized by Ridgefield High School student Lane Murdock, will take place on April 20. #ENOUGH is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and last for 17 minutes to protest legislative inaction on gun policy. Learn more about Murdock's National School Walkout here.
A huge thank you to Ridgefield's Finest who were present today for the safety of our students. We love you Ridgefield PD!
