Cooling Center in Ridgefield OPEN During Heat Wave

The Ridgefield Parks and Recreation Center at 195 Danbury Road, will continue to remain open to the public daily from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. as a heat wave cooling center today and tomorrow, July 3rd.  Hours of availability will be updated on Tuesday.

The National Weather Service has issued an advisory to our area, calling it a dangerous heat wave that will persist at least through Independence Day with record high temperatures possible.

Emergency Manager Dick Aarons urges residents to stay hydrated, particularly paying attention to children and pets and to avoid outdoor activity.  Remember, it is never safe to leave children, pets or anyone with a mobility disability outside or in a car, even with windows cracked.  According to the CDC, even when it feels cool outside, cars can heat up to dangerous temperatures very quickly. Temperatures can rise almost 20 degrees within the first ten minutes, even with a window cracked open.  Children who are left unattended in parked cars are at greatest risk for heat stroke, and possibly death.

The Centers For Disease Control (www.cd.gov) provides a comprehensive chart describing the symptoms of heat-related illnesses and what to do.   Call 911 immediately if a person experiences the following heat stroke symptoms:

  •       High body temperature
  •       Hot, red, dry or damp skin
  •       Fast, strong Pulse
  •       Headache
  •       Dizziness
  •       Nausea
  •       Confusion
  •       Loss of Consciousness (passing out)

The CDC also recommends moving the person to a cooler place, lower the person’s temperature with cool cloths or a cool bath.  Do not give the person anything to drink. For more information on other heat-related illnesses and what to do, go to www.cd.gov.
