The Aldrich Appoints New Executive Director

The Board of Trustees of The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum announced today that Cybele Maylone has been appointed Executive Director of the Museum. She will succeed Alyson Baker, who stepped down from the position in December 2017.

Maylone comes to The Aldrich from UrbanGlass in New York City where she has served as Executive Director since 2013. During her tenure there Maylone dramatically expanded the organization, raised its public profile, and worked closely with a number of artists who have also presented solo exhibitions at The Aldrich.

Maylone will assume the position at The Aldrich mid-September 2018. In partnership with the institution’s Trustees and professional staff, Maylone will work to further advance the Museum’s mission and strategically plan for its continued growth and future development.

Maylone is recognized for her work supporting emerging and mid-career contemporary artists and for her exemplary leadership. Prior to her position at UrbanGlass, Maylone was the Deputy Director of apexart, the contemporary art space in New York City. She has held several positions at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, in the departments of development and membership during that institution's transition to its new home in the Bowery in 2007.

Eric Diefenbach, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, said, “We are delighted to welcome Cybele Maylone to The Aldrich as the institution’s tenth Executive Director since our founding in 1964. With her passion for contemporary art and wide-ranging experience working closely with artists, she is uniquely prepared to lead The Aldrich into the next phase of its life, and to interpret our founder Larry Aldrich’s original vision in ways that engage our community and ever more diverse audiences of museumgoers.”

Maylone remarked, "The Aldrich unites two things that I revere in institutions: critical support to artists to create and present new work, and opportunities for the public to connect with contemporary art and ideas. I am deeply honored to be joining the Museum at such an exciting moment, and to be working closely with the staff, the Trustees, and the extended Aldrich Museum family as we launch a new phase in the life of this marvelous place.”

About the Museum

Founded by Larry Aldrich in 1964, The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum is dedicated to fostering the work of innovative artists whose ideas and interpretations of the world around us serve as a platform to encourage creative thinking. The Aldrich is one of the few independent, non-collecting contemporary art museums in the United States and the only museum in Connecticut devoted to contemporary art. The Museum is a national leader in the exhibition of significant and thought-provoking contemporary art, with an emphasis on emerging and mid-career artists. Since 1964, The Aldrich’s innovative exhibitions have presented the work of more than 8,000 artists, and have often been the first to introduce the work of now-acclaimed artists, including Eva Hesse, Robert Smithson, Frank Stella, Jack Whitten, Ann Hamilton, Olafur Eliasson, Huma Bhabha, KAWS, Mark Dion, and Shahzia Sikander, among many others.
