Local Weather: High Winds and Freeze Watch Friday and Saturday

A strong frontal system will approach the region late tonight with its associated cold front crossing the area. This system will bring strong to locally damaging winds, and a period of heavy rain, and possibly embedded thunderstorms, tonight. Minor shoreline impacts are also likely.  Much colder air moves in for Friday night with below-freezing temperatures for a portion of the area.

Potential Hazards and Impacts: 

Strong Winds:
 
A High Wind Warning is in Effect for Eastern Long Island and Southeastern Connecticut
A Wind Advisory is in Effect for Western Long Island, Southwestern CT, The NYC and NJ metropolitan area, and Southern Westchester Tonight
  • Hazard -
  • Eastern Long Island and Southeastern CT - Sustained southerly winds of 25 to 40 mph with damaging gusts up to 65 mph are expected across the warning area.
  • Western Long Island, Southwestern CT, NYC/NJ metro area, Southern Westchester - Sustained southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected across the advisory area. Isolated damaging wind gusts to 60 mph are possible.
  • Elsewhere sustained winds of  15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph are expected.  Isolated damaging wind gusts to 60 mph are possible.
  • Winds will shift to the west late tonight into early Friday morning, and gradually subside Friday morning.
  • Impact -
  • Damaging winds will bring down several to numerous tree limbs, trees and powerlines, with scattered to numerous power outages.
  • Travel will be difficult for high profile vehicles.
Rainfall:
  • Hazard -
  • A basin average rainfall of 1/2 to 1 inches is expected. Highest amounts expected north and west of NYC.
  • Impact -
  • Areas of urban and poor drainage flooding, particularly across the Lower Hudson Valley, NE NJ, and SW CT. 
Strong Thunderstorms:
  • A line of heavy showers, with possible embedded thunderstorms, is expected ahead of the cold front this evening into late tonight. An isolated strong to severe thunderstorm is possible, particularly west of the Hudson River.
  • Impact-
  • Isolated strong to damaging winds gusts are the main threat.
Coastal Flooding:
  • 9 to 13 ft breaking surf is likely along the ocean shoreline tonight into Friday morning.
  • This will cause significant beach flooding and erosion during the times of high tide.
  • Scattered areas of erosion to the dunes are possible, with localized overwashes where dune structures are already compromised.
Freezing Temperatures:
 
A Freeze Watch is in effect late Friday night into Saturday morning for most of southern Connecticut, part of northeastern New Jersey, the lower Hudson Valley, and eastern Long Island.
  • Freezing temperatures as low as the upper 20's late Friday night into Saturday morning
  • Freezing temperatures could kill crops and sensitive vegetation.
