So, just how good can a $9.99 bottle be? I'm glad you asked.
Chateau Massiac was built in the 17th century, in what is now the Languedoc's appellation of Minervois. Bernard Boudouresque revived the estate, ultimately transitioning to Organic viticulture (certified since 2012).
Conditions at the state are nearly as good as it gets in the region. Limestone and clay subsoils streaked with marble and silex are easily penetrated by vine roots with just the right amount of drainage. Mediterranean breezes and ample sunshine warm the area by day, ensuring complete and even ripeness. Winds from the nearby Causes mountains cool and dry the vineyards at night, maintaining freshness and acidity.
Historically, the estate sold its wine in bulk, until the stars aligned, and they were introduced to a name we see around the shop quite a bit: Neal Rosenthal.
Grown on 25 year old vines, Syrah (60%) and Carignan (40%) are hand-harvested and entirely destemmed before pressing.
Fermented in concrete vats, and bottled unfined, the wine beautifully expresses the hallmarks of these grapes.
Warm, ripe strawberries and blackberries , scented with dried woody herbs and a touch of cola in front of leathery, dusty earth and crushed gravel. Medium bodied and juicy on the palate, with cured black olives toasted, cracked pepper, and savory umami showing at the edges. Tannins are young but balanced and restrained. Ripe, yet fresh, this Minervois offering would be at home with so many dishes; charcuterie, burgers, roasted vegetables, stews, or whatever you've grilled. A perfectly versatile "house red" that I'd pour just as happily on a Tuesday night as I would for a dinner guest."
