Ridgefield’s New Cultural District Designation Features Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center

The Connecticut Office of the Arts (COA) has designated Ridgefield the first-ever Cultural District in the state, and Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center (KTM&HC) is proud to help anchor the southern edge of the district from its prominent location on Main Street.

The COA defines Cultural Districts as walkable areas of a city or town that feature numerous cultural facilities, activities and/or assets. These vibrant areas draw visitors from other towns and states and serve as a hub for residents to congregate and interact. “As a history museum, KTM&HC is uniquely positioned as an economic driver for Ridgefield, inviting visitors to learn more about the local, state, regional, and national history our site speaks to,” said Board President Rhonda Hill. “The breadth and depth of our history, as well as our ability to connect the past to the contemporary American experience, makes KTM&HC a must-see when visitors come to explore our Cultural District.”

The first-of-its-kind Cultural District encompasses downtown Ridgefield and surrounding areas that stretch from KTM&HC in the south portion through Ballard Park and the Ridgefield Library in the north, and a half mile to the east to the Ridgefield Theater Barn and Guild of Artists. It includes additional cultural attractions such as the Pride Arts Center, Conservatory of Dance, Prospector Theater, Scott House, ACT of CT, and the Ridgefield Playhouse.

“This program recognizes the essential role that local arts and cultural resources play in the building of healthy communities over the long-term,” said Liz Shapiro, director of arts, preservation, and museums for the Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development. “I applaud Ridgefield for taking the initiative to establish the district and ensuring that arts and culture are at the heart of their planning efforts moving forward.”

The Ridgefield Economic & Community Development Commission (ECDC) will delineate this new Cultural District with signs placed on the north and south sides of Main Street, marking when visitors enter the Cultural District. KTM&HC’s four expansive acres – holding the stories of over three hundred years of American history – will provide a warm and scenic welcome for visitors entering the District from the south.
