On the heels of yesterday’s Battle of Ridgefield reenactment in the downtown area, this morning, the community gathered in Ballard Park where the Connecticut 5th Regiment and The Brigade of the American Revolution conducted a funeral procession and ceremony, rooted in the traditions of the late 1700s, for the Revolutionary War soldiers discovered in Ridgefield in 2019.
While research continues on the actual remains, these young men died in battle in 1777 and today, the soldiers received formal recognition at the location where they were discovered - the Casey house on Main Street. The photo you here (image #1, courtesy of Gerri Lewis) shows the Casey family standing in front of their home, the caskets draped with the American and British flags carrying the soldiers.
The reverent event honoring the lives of two British and two American soldiers included horse-drawn carriage procession, period caskets and music, and a musket salute.
Read more about the skeletal remains on the Ridgefield Historical Society website.
Thank you to the Ridgefield Historical Society, the Town of Ridgefield and members of the 5th Connecticut Regiment and The Brigade of the American Revolution for all that you did to make the 245th Anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield one for the history books.
Special thanks to the Casey family for allowing the community to authentically honor the legacy of the Battle of Ridgefield soldiers.
