Ridgefield resident Harvey Fierstein carries his Torch (Song) to Broadway!

Ridgefield resident Harvey Fierstein is proudly carrying his Torch, his Torch Song, to be specific. His play, starring Michael Urie and Mercedes Ruehl, has moved from off Broadway’s Second Stage theater to Broadway’s Helen  Hayes Theater. Broadway will light up with Harvey in the fall.

According to Entertainment Tonight, earlier this week, Harvey Fierstein literally carried a heavy metal sign through Times Square in celebration of his play, Torch Song. The play is returning to its old stomping grounds, where it premiered more than 35 years ago.

Fierstein’s Torch Song, Directed by Moisés Kaufman, follows Arnold, a gay man, in three stages of his life - from his time as a drag queen to raising a teenager. The Stonewall riots, the queer club scene and the AIDS crisis serve as the backdrop for these important milestones in Arnold’s path.

According to Broadway.com, the play will begin previews on October 9 and open on November 1 at the Helen Hayes Theatre.
