Ridgefield kids invited to create a short film for RIFF

RIFF Presents the 2018 Youth Film Shorts Program

The RIFF Youth Film Shorts Program, made possible by support from Liz and Steven Goldstone, invite Ridgefield students in grades 4 through 6 to create a short film which will be shown during the Ridgefield Independent Film Festival on October 20.

The Ridgefield Independent Film Festival Youth Film Shorts Program will culminate on October 20, during RIFF’s four-day festival. The one-hour presentation will consist of four, five-minute short films. Each work will have been written, filmed, and performed by a group of five Ridgefield youth. A fifth short film will recount the making of the four short films. That behind-the-scenes production will be the work of Ridgefield High School students.

The films will be created over a two-weekend period in September. Led by former Nickelodeon writer, director, and producer Dave Goldenberg, the Youth Film Shorts Program welcomes up to 20 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders.

The program is broken into four segments on two separate Saturdays. On Saturday, September 22, the 20 students will gather for brainstorming and script writing. Ten students will gather from 8 am to noon and ten students from 1 pm to 5 pm. Goldenberg and his team will inspire them and provide guidance and oversight as the students conceive of the movie plot and write the script. Snack food and drinks will be provided.

The students will return the following Saturday, September 29, to perform and film the shorts. In the ensuing week, Goldenberg and team will refine the scripts, create shoot lists, and scout locations. Goldberg and his team will direct the kids—two groups of five from 8 am to noon and two groups of five from 1 pm to 5 pm. Snack food and drinks will be provided.

The shorts will be filmed using iPhones, with added sound-recording systems for audio quality. Professional film editors will reduce the raw footage into the final five-minute shorts.

All participating students will be invited to the Youth Film Shorts Program on Saturday, October 20, and each will be given film credits. There is no cost to participate, and no previous experience is needed. The program is limited to 20 students.
