Ballard Park Goes To The Pumpkins in 2018 Weigh Off!

Pumpkin growers from around the region greeted community members, pumpkin enthusiasts, and lovers of all things fall in Ballard Park yesterday for the Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh Off!

Sponsored by Ridgefield Chamber of Commerce, the popular event was organized and supported by two Ridgefield giant pumpkin fans - Jessica Collins, and pumpkin grower, Steve Maydan.

As in year's past, in addition to tremendous (pun intended) bragging rights, pumpkin growers competed for cash prizes ranging from $2,500 for first place, to $100 awarded to a youth grower.

Thanks to the many local artisan vendors, as well as local businesses who set up shop in Ballard Park with wares, animals (Henny Penny Farm!), and creative goods! In addition to the many vendors, there were a host of fall activities for kids including a pumpkin decorating contents and pumpkin-themed games!

Earning the top award for the second consecutive year was Ron Wallace, returned to Ridgefield from Rhode Island with another giant beauty weighing in at 1,806.5 pounds!

Joe Jutras set a world record last year with a squash that weighed in at over 2,000 pounds! Today his squash took home first place at 927.5 pounds!

Collins remarked that it was a special day for Eddy Giarrusso whose pumpkin started the day with a ferry ride from Prudence Island, Rhode Island. Giarrusso set a personal best and took home 2nd place with this giant who topped the scale at 1.659.5 pounds!

Congratulations to all who participated in the 2018 Weigh Off and many, many thanks to both Jess, Steve and the Chamber for all of your hard work! This is such a fabulous town event!
