The St. Luke's Theatre Company will raise the curtain on Sarah DeLappe’s The Wolves, the 2016 play about a girls’ soccer team, on January 5 at 7:00 pm in the school’s Black Box Theatre. A matinee performance will take on January 6 at 3pm. Admission is free and open to the public.
New Canaan-based St. Luke’s School is one of only three high schools in the country given the licensing rights to perform The Wolves, which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 2017.
Directed by Ridgefield resident and Director of Theater Arts at Saint Luke’s School, Jason Peck, The Wolves is not your typical high school play. “It contains very frank language and situations one might not be accustomed to seeing in a high school, but Sarah DeLappe's brutal honesty, her true to life exploration, her deep love of these characters make this unfiltered piece of theatre a true delight to see and experience,” says Peck.
When asked about her inspiration in writing the play which premiered off-Broadway at The Playwrights Realm, Sarah DeLappe remarked, “I wanted to see a portrait of teenage girls as human beings - as complicated, nuanced, very idiosyncratic people who weren’t just girlfriends or sex objects or manic pixie dream girls but who were athletes and daughters and students and scholars and people who were trying actively to figure out who they were in this changing world around them.”
Due to the play’s suggestive content and profanity, St. Luke’s is not permitting students under the age of fourteen to see the performance.
Peck says that he was attracted to the play and its thought-provoking storyline because it examines what it means to be an individual (with your own opinions, foibles, idiosyncrasies) within a group dynamic. “These girls are their own people but yet come together as a team to do battle. In life, those two things are often in conflict and it makes for a wonderful piece of theatre,” says Peck.
The play’s all-star cast has worked tirelessly to unleash a stellar performance. Peck says, “I don’t think I’ve come upon a cast that has worked this hard and has bond this tightly.”
The Wolves will be performed at St. Luke's School Black Box Theatre (377 N. Wilton Road, New Canaan) on Saturday, January 5th at 7:00 pm and Sunday, January 6th at 3:00pm.
