Saint Mary School Students Build Lucy, Learn About Archeology and Prehistory

Grade 6 Saint Mary School students recently completed a "Creating Lucy" project in Social Studies.  Students worked in groups and created a model of "Lucy", the collection of bones discovered in 1974 by American fossil hunter Donald Johanson.  The groups were graded on their creativity, effective use of time, written document and teamwork.

SMS Social Studies teacher Jenn Gallo used the Lucy project to introduce middle school students to group project work. "Building Lucy not only helps solidify information about archeology and prehistory, but it also reinforces the life skills of problem-solving, teamwork, innovation, and flexibility," she explains.
