Votes for Women: Ridgefield Historical Society Exhibit Opens March 1

The Ridgefield Historical Society and the League of Women Voters of Ridgefield will present their new exhibit, Votes for Women: The Road to Victory, at the Ridgefield Library on Sunday, March 1.

Eleven panels trace the history of the movement on local, state and national levels, incorporating research by the League and the Historical Society, presented by graphic artist Bil Mikulewicz.

The exhibit will open Sunday, March 1, at the Ridgefield Library with a talk by Dr. Kelly Marino at 4 p.m. A reception will follow from 5 to 6 p.m.

The talk and exhibit are part of Votes for Women: Ridgefield Celebrates the 19th Amendment, a year-long celebration of the centennial of the Constitutional Amendment that declared: “The right of citizens . . . to vote shall not be abridged . . . on account of sex.”

Dr. Marino, an assistant lecturer of history and coordinator of women’s studies at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, is a historian of 20th Century America with a focus on women’s history. She is writing a book on the connections between advances in women’s higher education and the women’s rights movement. She is a frequent speaker and expert on the Connecticut woman suffrage movement.

The exhibit at the library, which will be on view through March and a concurrent exhibit on Woman Suffrage will take place at Town Hall, featuring materials and artifacts from the movement, many from the Ridgefield Historical Society collection.

Registration for Dr. Marino’s talk and the exhibit reception on March 1 is available on the Ridgefield Library’s website, where a complete list of Votes for Women events is posted.

The Votes for Women: Ridgefield Celebrates the 19th Amendment series is co-sponsored by Ridgefield Library, Ridgefield Historical Society, the League of Women Voters of Ridgefield, Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center, and the Drum Hill Chapter of the DAR.

This program is supported by CT Humanities and Fairfield County Bank.
