Why Creativity Matters in Ridgefield: Meet Pamme Jones

Why Creativity Matters made possible by LIFEWTR

What fuels a vibrant, connected and creative community? What makes people feel good about living in Ridgefield?

When locals share the creativity that they uncover in the nooks and crannies of their community it brings about connectivity and makes us all feel good.

Believe it or not, you discover creativity every day as you walk, shop, work, and play in Ridgefield. HamletHub’s “Why Creativity Matters” showcases these awesome local experiences.

Three questions with Pamme Jones, the Executive Director of Ridgefield Theater Barn.

What makes you feel good about Ridgefield?

There is a real sense of community engagement here for Ridgefield residents and business owners - from the highest level down to the smallest of involvement at your kid’s school.  That sense of engagement builds a real sense of community in our town.  Combine that with a literal, physical Main Street, complete with boutiques, flower shops, and even a Hot Dog Stand  (Chez Leonard), and you get a pretty fabulous town! But of course, I can't talk about Ridgefield without mentioning the arts.  Ridgefield's commitment to the arts as part of the economic and cultural fabric is a major reason why I love Ridgefield. During the pandemic, it has been no surprise to see the proclamations of "being in this together" here in town- whether it is being proclaimed in the windows of businesses that are temporarily closed, banners being displayed by organizations or in the yards of residents across the town. It feels good to be a part of a community that is together, even when apart.

Where do you see creativity when you shop locally?

We have a bookstore, for goodness sakes! That's a great place to find and inspire creativity! I see creativity everywhere- and not just in a shop that may be associated with creativity, like Rodier Flowers or Shine Salon. From the window displays to the potted plants at the shop’s entrance, these local retail stores exude creativity.  Our downtown shops have carved out their niche to not only survive but thrive and buck the big-box trend.  I am never at a loss for a gift or an experience that is unique. Watching our local businesses do a "Covid-Pivot" has been inspriring.  The creativity that is being displayed in order to ride this quarantine out and help our neighbors at the same time is amazing.

Finish this sentence: I feel creative in Ridgefield when...

I walk down the street, whether I am running errands and having meetings or shopping, and I run into friends and colleagues who are busy doing the same thing (but never too busy to stop and visit).  Especially for those of us in the arts, it’s these little “chance”  meetings where great ideas are born and collaborations can start! I love our little town and its residents and am honored to serve as the Executive Director of Ridgefield Theater Barn, the town's only community theater who has been open for 54 years to anyone who wants to make a contribution to the performing arts! The spirit of collaboration and creativity is what will make this town rise up out of the COVID times stronger than ever.

At the Theater Barn, we have been thrilled to offer the community a chance to express themselves in any creative capacity during the quarantine with our "Stealing the Ghost Light" initiative.  The Barn has always been a place for inclusion, respect and joy and we wanted to make sure we could still stay true to our mission during these isolating times.  Having Ridgefield's Poet Laureate share her poems with me on one of my live Ghost Light Sessions was so special, and in turn, inspired many others to share their stories.  This ripple effect of supportive and creative sharing feeds my creativity and passion for keeping that spirit at the core of the RTB mission and our commitment to providing our community a place to create and thrive.  I cannot wait until all the arts and cultural venues can open our doors again and let that creativity and collaboration be celebrated together!
