Ridgefield Newbie Saves her Shorkie from Hawk, Purchases Protective Coat of Armor

Meet Amanda - she's new to Ridgefield having discovered the beauty of life in the New England suburbs while quarantining during the pandemic. She and her husband, along with their two dogs, fled New York City for quintessential Ridgefield and love (almost) everything about it.

Enter: the large hawk that almost swept away one of her small dogs.

Yes, this happened recently in the center of town - the Mountain View-Island Hill area to be exact. The target was Amanda's smaller rescue dog named Lucy Jean, a Shorkie (half Shitzu and half Yorkie). Due to the incident, Amanda purchased a protective (and colorful) coat of armor for her dogs (check out CoyoteVest.com).

I met Amanda today while she was walking her dogs and she explained that she purchased the vests after a large hawk picked up Lucy Jean by the backside - holding her in the air! This is when Amanda's mama bear instinct kicked in full-throttle and she went after the bird - grabbing its wing to protect Lucy Jean.

According to BirdWatchingHQ, there are eight species of hawks in Connecticut, the most common being the Red-tailed Hawk. Please note: we are not certain this was the type of Hawk that went after Lucy Jean.
