Ridgefield Operation for Animal Rescue (ROAR) Honors John Katz with 2021 Community Star Award

Ridgefield Operation for Animal Rescue (ROAR) recently honored John Katz with its 2021 Community Star Award for his outstanding contributions and support. An original founding member of ROAR, John continues to be a long-time volunteer and supporter of ROAR, and the welfare of animals. He also supports several additional non-profits and organizations in the community that provide assistance to kids and adults who are in need.

“John Katz’s compassion and relentless commitment to the well-being of animals and people have made a huge, lasting impact on our community and so many lives,” said Andrea Leone-Bay, Board President for ROAR. “We are grateful for John’s continued support and are so pleased to honor him for his outstanding efforts.”

John has long had a major concern for the welfare of animals. For 20 years, he was a Peace Officer and Special Agent, working for the Westchester County SPCA, out of Briar Cliff Manor. John investigated cruelty cases, making arrests where necessary.

He started his association with ROAR more than two decades ago as part of a small dedicated group of volunteers, then headed by Marcia Libby, which built the Donofrio Family Animal Shelter. When a call came in from a woman whose Shepherd had a broken front leg and needed surgery and could not afford it, he started The Jessa Fund at ROAR. In underwriting that expense, he was made acutely aware of the need to help pet owners who are experiencing financial hardships and need assistance with various veterinary services. The Jessa Fund is an ongoing fund that John and his brother support and contribute to when they can for cases when pet owners reach out to ROAR and need help.

John is also the head of the Ridgefield Youth Service Bureau, which is a position he’s held since 1986. The agency offers counseling for children and adolescents ages three through 18 and their families. It is the only no-cost or low-cost agency in Ridgefield offering professional counseling services to any youth or family with such a need.

Additionally, John served on the Ridgefield Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse for many years, working with the First Selectman, Police Chief, the school Superintendent and others in an attempt to lessen the use of alcohol and drugs in the community.

John has also served as a member of the Ridgefield’s Planning and Zoning Commission for more than 45 years.
