Update: Richard Howard, Former Ridgefield Tennis Club Owner, St. Mary Parishioner, has Died

Richard B. Howard, 97, of Ridgefield, died peacefully on Tuesday, January 18, 2022. For over fifty years, he was the loving husband of the late Teresa “Lily” Howard. Mr. Howard was born in New York City on August 24, 1924. He served in the U.S. Merchant Marines during the Second World War, supporting the invasion of Normandy in 1944. Afterwards, he received a Bachelor of Science and during the infancy of electronic communications, worked as an engineer for PanAm and CBS.
 
A resident of Ridgefield since 1966, Mr. Howard and Lily owned and operated the Ridgefield Tennis Club on Copps Hill Road for over twenty-five years. He was a faithful member of St. Mary’s Church, served in the Knights of Columbus and American Legion Post 78 in Ridgefield. He enjoyed playing bridge at Founders Hall, learning the piano and gardening.
 
Richard, Sr. is survived by five children; Virginia Bernal-Price of Warwick, Rhode Island, Charles of Newport, R.I., Patrick of Ridgefield, Richard and Dianna of San Antonio, Texas, Robert and Julia of Ridgefield; grandchildren Michael, David, Alex, Gemma, Ryan, James, Tyrel and Alisa; and three great grandchildren.
 
Family and friends will be received on Monday, January 24, 2022 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Kane Funeral Home; 25 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary's Church; 55 Catoonah Street, Ridgefield. Interment with US Military funeral honors will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Ridgefield.
