Olympic Bronze Medalist, Kieran Smith returns to Ridgefield, trains this summer with RAC Coach Emmanuel Lanzo

Ridgefield’s Olympic Bronze Medalist, Kieran Smith, recently returned from Budapest, Hungary after competing at the 19th FINA World Championships, June 18- July 3, 2022.

Smith, a member of the USA Swimming National Team, qualified to compete at World Championships by winning both the 200 and 400-meter freestyle events at the Phillips 66 International Team Trials in Greensboro, NC in April. Swimming for Team USA in Budapest, Smith placed 6th in the 200-meter freestyle (1:45.16), 7th in the 400-meter freestyle (3:46.43), and won gold swimming the anchor leg of the men’s 4x200 meter freestyle relay (7:00.24). This is Team USA’s first World Championships gold medal in the men’s 4x200 relay since 2013.

Smith, a 28-time All-American, recently completed his collegiate swimming career at the University of FL. While swimming NCAA, he won two National Titles (200-yard freestyle and 4x50 yard freestyle relay) and holds the American and NCAA record in the 500-yard freestyle. Before college, the former Ridgefield Aquatic Club (RAC) swimmer and 2018 Ridgefield HS graduate, won seven CIAC State Open titles and still holds records in the 200 and 500-yard freestyles.

People often ask, “What’s next for Smith?” This summer, you will see Smith training under Coach Emmanuel Lanzo at RAC. He is entered to swim the 800-meter freestyle at CT Senior Championships, July 7th at the University of CT–Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. He and Lanzo will travel to Irvin, CA, July 26-30, for the Phillips 66 National Championships at the William Woollett Jr. Aquatic Center. After a short break, Smith will continue his professional swimming career in Gainesville, FL, training with other Olympic standouts, Katie Ledecky, Caleb Dressel, Bobby Finke and Natalie Hinds, directed by Coach Anthony Nesty.
