Meet Ridgefield High School Music’s Student of the Month: Diana Kovacs

The Ridgefield High School Music Department is proud to announce Diana Kovacs as the January Student of the Month. Due to her contribution and enthusiasm towards the music program, the senior is known as a natural musician, and an overall genuine person.

Diana’s love for music began back in elementary school, with  the piano, recorder, violin, and choir. The talented musician switched to the flute in fifth grade, taking private lessons with a teacher she believes helped her get to where she is today. “Not only has she helped me improve as a musician, but she showed me how to be confident and how to advocate for myself,” Diana expressed.

Kovacs holds several leadership positions in the music department, including the concertmaster of the Wind Ensemble, a drum major in the Pep Band, and principal flutist of the Symphonic Orchestra. She also sings in the Madrigals choir and plays in the Pit Orchestra. “I love the abundance of opportunities the RHS music program offers its students. I can be in band, orchestra, choir, and even play in the pit orchestra for the musical,” explained Diana. Kovacs enjoys playing the flute, piccolo, piano, clarinet, alto saxophone, and guitar. This year, Diana would love to see the music program grow even more, especially throughout the school.

The student's music groups don't just include the ones in school, for she is also a part of the Western Connecticut Youth Orchestra, and Charles Ives Music Festival over the summer. When not playing music, Diana is involved in various clubs after school, including Astronomy and GSA. Kovacs is also quite the artist, especially when it comes to watercolors and poetry.

"Diana has been committed to this band program for the past four years and she's extremely deserving of student of the month,” comments band director George Beratis. “For as long as I've known her she has been at the peak of musicianship while continuing to grow towards virtuosic levels on the flute and piccolo. Above all, she's a wonderful human being who is kind, empathetic, and always willing to help others. I am so proud of her accomplishments."

Next year, Diana will be majoring in Music Education, and possibly minoring in performance or conducting. “I’m very excited to be able to focus more on my music once I go to college,” the senior explained. True leadership, skill, and creativity has been shown in Diana throughout her years here at RHS, and the music department wishes her the very best for her future years.
