Meet Ridgefield High School Music’s Student of the Month: Sophie Browning

The Ridgefield High School Music Department is proud to announce Sophie Browning as the February Student of the Month. This senior has shown incredible leadership at RHS throughout the years, and her involvement and kindness toward the music program has made a great impact.

Sophie’s music career started in the fourth grade, when she began playing bass. As she got older, she acquired a private teacher. “ I have grown to love it thanks to an excellent private teacher who has helped me get to where I am today,” Sophie said.

Browning has several important roles in the music program, including the bass section leader in Symphonic and Chamber orchestra, the department treasurer, and music mentor. “I enjoy the community we have built through the RHS music program. We’ve been playing music with many of the same kids since elementary school,” says the musician. Sophie enjoys playing the double bass, and is also a member of the debate team and math team. Her talents are not only shown in school, however. Sophie has participated in the Fairfield County Summer Strings
orchestra since 2015, always striving for excellence. This year, Browning would like to progress even further, stating, “I plan to keep working hard with the orchestra on Mahler 5 and put together a great final performance in May.”

As the senior prepares for her final concerts, she is preparing for her future as well. While she doesn't intend to study music in college, she hopes to join an extracurricular orchestra along the way, while studying mathematics in college.

“Sophie is one of our department's unsung heroes. She just quietly does an amazing job at everything she does, from being principal bassist in Symphonic and Chamber Orchestra to being the music department's Leadership Council treasurer,” comments orchestra director
Micheal McNamara. “She expects nothing in return for what she gives us, and understands that leadership is a service. She's proactive, thorough, friendly, and warm...all in addition to being a terrific musician. We are going to miss her terribly!"

Sophie has shown what it takes to be a true musician over these four years, and she will forever have a place in the orchestra program. We wish her best of luck for her future, and congratulate her on all her accomplishments.
