Bookmarks Mark Ridgefield: A Community Project at The Aldrich

Critically acclaimed artist Ruth Root is sharing her love for books during an extraordinary long-term art-making program, Bookmarks Mark Ridgefield, through April 3, 2016. The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, in partnership with Ridgefield Library, is inviting the community to design and create one-of-a-kind bookmarks inspired by Root's bold colors and forms.

The public can visit The Aldrich's Education Center or the special Ruth Root bookmark-making station at the Ridgefield Library to make these unique art pieces, which will then be placed in random books throughout the Ridgefield Library for browsers and borrowers to keep!

Root's practice centers on an intensive investigation of color, material, form, and support.  Her exhibition at The Aldrich, Ruth Root: Old, Odd, and Oval, focuses on medium- to large-scale site-engaged paintings that demonstrate her experimentation with new materials and fabrication methods, combining hand-painted plexiglass with colorful patterns she designs digitally.

Root has always loved reading, and real, tangible books. She made use of any scraps around her studio to save her place in oversized books and mark images, references, and text. Over time, these scraps grew to become an ongoing creative project using materials from her studio to create beautiful and unique bookmarks.

Ruth Root: Old, Odd, and Oval, part of the exhibition series Painting in Four Takes, is on view at The Aldrich until April 3, 2016.  The Museum is open Monday, Wednesday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday from 12 noon to 5 pm.
