Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Let’s make 2018 a big year for our Ridgefield small businesses and put a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community.

Three questions with Todd Brown, owner of 109 Cheese and Wine.

Why did you start your business?

Back in November 2001, I went on a blind date in Baxter Park with Monica and her two Great Danes.  I fell for her and asked if she would like to date me.  Her response was a clear and decisive, “I’m going to open a wine store”. My answer was a clear, “If I help you open a wine store, will you date me?"  From that moment on, Monica has been my leader and love. I now love wine, cheese and all things foodie even more - and we have made it our life! The best reason to start a business, in my opinion, is passion and love. I found both and Monica tells me she has too.

I wish I could…..

I wish I could explain how hard the retailers, restaurateurs and small business owners work for every dollar. It is, and has to be,  one of the most challenging career choices. I see hateful reviews on social media platforms and wonder why it sometimes becomes such a bitter forum. If there is a problem that needs to be corrected please call the business owner and give that a try first. I know that some owners don’t respond well or think that they don’t have to listen to criticism but, for all of us that do, we strive to be better and do listen to suggestions. One of the wonderful aspects of small owner-operated business is the connection that we have with our customers.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We practically live in the Marketplace. We get all of our platter needs (grapes, herbs, etc) from Ridgefield Organics, our morning coffee from Ross’ Bread, and maybe an after work margarita from Southwest Cafe. We love our wine dinners with Bernard’s and Southwest Cafe and our relationship with Ancona’s (they sell our cheese). Did I mention that we just started a new program with Nod Hill Brewery too?

Monica and I are very proud to be part of the Ridgefield community and thank everyone for all of the support over the last 15 years.
