Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Ridgefield Glass!

Three questions with John Petchonka, owner of Ridgefield Glass.

Why did you start your business?

For 26 years, I was in management for global engineering and construction companies.  I grew tired of corporate politics and constant travel.  I wanted to be in control of my own destiny and have more family quality time.  In 2004, I developed a business plan for a new services business that would be locally based (being a Ridgefield resident since 1989).  Part of my plan was to purchase a small local business to provide a revenue stream until the new business achieved steady state.  Ridgefield Glass came on the market about the same time and looked interesting with real growth potential.  I bought Ridgefield Glass in May 2005 and my business plan was put on the shelf! Ridgefield Glass offered everything I wanted - a small business, serving the local community and a chance to spend more time with my family.  Having owned Ridgefield Glass for over 13 years, I can truly say I was fortunate and made the right decision.

What is your best selling product/service?

While we are a full-service glass contractor, our focus is on residential clients.  By far, our largest selling product is frameless shower enclosures of all styles and types.  Currently, we are installing a significant number of frameless "barn door" style sliding enclosures.  We supply all the required hardware, giving our clients' an option on handle styles, glass types and hardware finishes.  We do our own installation and also provide other frameless applications such as Wine Room enclosures, Exercise Room enclosures and mirrors of various styles for just about every application.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

While most of our major glass fabricators are located out of state, we do buy local supplies to accomplish our installations and are frequent shoppers at Ridgefield Hardware and Ridgefield Supply.  We also utilize several local businesses for our required services.  Rich and the boys at Ace Tire service all our vehicles with honesty and integrity.  Our account, Terry Reddington of Compu-Tab Services, is a long time Ridgefield resident.  Country Disposal handles all of our trash pick up from our Danbury warehouse/shop.

Ridgefield Glass is located at 159 Danbury Road, Suite 102. Call them at (203) 438 -  or visit them online here.
