You're IT DeMotte Architects!
Three questions with Brad DeMotte, founder of DeMotte Architects.
Why did you start your business?
I started my business 30 years ago in 1990 as it was always my intention to run my own architectural firm. Once graduated from college, you must complete an internship by working for one or more licensed architects for three years and then you qualify to take the licensing test. This is a 36-hour test done over four days. I passed my test just four years out of school, and once licensed I started my own firm. I started my business because I love designing houses and making people’s dreams become reality, and working directly with homeowners is a very satisfying experience.
Finish this sentence in regard to your business. "I wish I could…"
I wish I could explain to most homeowners and the general public the value in hiring an architect, as most seem to think it’s an unnecessary expense because they don’t understand the process of how something gets built. A lot takes place behind the scenes before a builder starts to build any project, which most people seem to be unaware of. The design phase is the most important part of any project, as what gets designed is what’s going to get built. The builder needs to know what he’s being asked to build, which is where the construction drawings come into play. Without a good set of construction drawings, a builder cannot provide an exact price for the construction cost & construction will be done on the fly - which can lead to many mistakes, compromises and costs spiraling out of control.
I use the following local businesses to support my business:
- Blueprinting: Joseph Merritt & Co.
- Copying/printing: Economy printing & Staples
- Office Supplies: Core Reprographics & Staples
- Graphic designer: Suki Schavior
