Three questions with Stacey Sussman, owner of Stacey's Totally Baked.
Why did you start your business?
It all started in 2014 with a garbage truck cake for my son’s third birthday. After that came a unicorn for my daughter and by 2016, I had graduated to a cake for a family wedding; Stacey’s Totally Baked was born that weekend. In 2020, I left my job in the corporate world to devote myself full time to my mission of making the world a "sweeter" place. I am a Connecticut licensed cottage bakery which means all of my original creations and signature products are made out of my home kitchen. My goal is to create beautiful cakes, cupcakes and other baked goods that taste better than they look.
What is your best-selling product/service?
Cakes/cupcakes are my best sellers as they can be any flavor and decorated to suit the needs of any party. Favorites include Mochaccino (chocolate cake, coffee buttercream), Coconut cake with Fluff, and Carrot Cake with cream cheese icing. A couple of unique items that I make are Babkas and my family’s non-traditional Mandel Bread. Recently there's been a growing interest in my cake and mousse "shooters" - individual desserts perfect for any party.
How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?
Deborah’s Ann’s chocolate-covered espresso beans add a punch of flavor to my Mochaccino cupcakes. For any live flower needs, I partner with Laura Cantwell of Purple Heather Floral Designs. Kim Begonja of Purple Frog Graphics helps with my printing needs including business cards and box stickers. More broadly, I've learned the local business community is incredibly supportive of each other both on social media and with how they spend their own dollars. We all understand that a robust local economy will benefit the entire community.
