Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Cozy Cabin Creations!

Three questions with Gabriele Orbanic, owner of Cozy Cabin Creations.

Why did you start your business?

Cozy Cabin Creations started with my newfound passion for machine embroidery. I used to do hand embroidery as a child and young adult but honestly, it takes a long time to embroider by hand. I found myself working in the apparel decoration industry first as a silk-screener then embroiderer. I realized the endless possibilities of machine embroidery and bought a machine of my own and began creating! I'm hoping to one day to open a shop.

I make handmade pillows, market bags, lampshades, all are decorated with beautiful designs. I decorate tea towels, kitchen towels, napkins, tablecloths, and aprons. Among many other items. I really enjoy it and have been selling items at Sharon's Hair Studio in New Milford as well and the Kent Farmer's Market. There is an upcoming Artisan Festival in New Milford I'll be in as well. I have a small presence on Facebook and Instagram and a website Cozycabincreations.com.

What is your best-selling product/service?

My best-selling items right now are kitchen aprons, vintage tea towels with County Fair designs, small stuffed monsters for kids, pillows that sell really well as gifts for all occasions. Chickens seem to be a favorite theme, I've got all kinds.

My best selling service is Sewing and Repair, also a small business in Ridgefield, but we can talk about that another time.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

Yes, I did. I've been slowly evolving going toward offering custom orders. I'd love to hear what people are looking for in a gift for that special someone. My ultimate goal is to actually have a storefront where folks can drop by see and purchase my creations year-round.
