Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Sammy + Nat!

Four questions with Samantha Benson, owner of Sammy + Nat.

Why did you start your business?

I started S+N as a gap I saw in the market. It first started as an idea for women’s luxe loungewear, but quickly learned there was a need for quality and “not so sweet” baby and child sleepwear - there were plenty of brands that offered that sweet and whimsical feel, but none that really were modern, fresh or spoke to me as a brand that someone who was fashion-minded could get on board with and feel proud to give as a gift. I set out to build a brand that was fun, modern and offered a clean and fresh feel.

We partner with many different artists and entrepreneurs that help keep our prints and brand aesthetic edgy and interesting.

What is your best-selling product/service?

Our best-selling items and what we are known for are our Pima Cotton Rompers, Pajamas, and baby accessories.

How many local businesses do you use to support your business (products and services) and can you name them?

We use a bunch of local merchants and sell their products. Smoke + Slate, Merrimane, Gells Belts, Pearl Street Swim, Sail to Sable - All local women-owned brands.

Have you "reimagined" your small business?

As the business has grown over the years it has definitely evolved and we have taken creative directions that weren’t necessarily planned from the beginning but natural to our success and have turned out to be the right decisions. During the pandemic, especially, our whole world was turned upside down, especially our Brick-and-Mortar stores, we had to rely solely online which was a new way of doing business for us - especially to stop dead in our tracks at the beginning of the Spring Season (March 2020) and completely reinvent our plan to sell what we had purchased.

We learned so much about our business, our customers, and our team over the past year and a half and feel we took a negative situation and made it into a positive. During that time, we were (and are) so grateful that babies were still being born, birthdays were still being celebrated and people lived in their pajamas - because it kept us in business. We definitely consider ourselves one of the lucky businesses. It wasn’t easy, but we are stronger than ever.
