Why Small Businesses Matter

Shop small, do big things for your community

Why Small Businesses Matter puts a spotlight on the local merchants who donate their time, talent, goods, and services for the betterment of our community. The shop local movement spreads virally as local businesses who are “tagged” have the opportunity to share their story!

You're IT Salt Sugar Spice!

Three questions with Larry and Brenda Lanzilli, founders of Salt Sugar Spice.

Why did you start your business?

I created my food blog to follow my passion for cooking, entertaining and sharing recipes. I've learned much about the industry and how multi-faceted blogging and brand management can be. After about a year and a half of exclusively creating recipes and content for Salt Sugar Spice, I created an additional service for my local base of clients.

Currently, in addition to creating and sharing recipes on the blog, I work with a select number of clients every week to cook and deliver family-style home-cooked dinners that are personalized to each family's nutritional needs and preferences.

What is your best-selling product/service?

When I cook for a family, they are usually looking for me to deliver two to three family-style dinners per week. So I'd say that is the most popular package to purchase. On my blog, the two most highly trafficked recipes are my Crab Stuffed Baked Salmon and The Best Rigatoni a la Vodka with Panetta.

How have you “reimagined” your small business?

I began my Chef service in October 2020 when a friend of mine asked if it would be possible for me to cook their family dinners every week. While she enjoyed cooking herself, she just did not have the time with the demands of her job and family responsibilities. Of course, I said yes, and from there my the Personal Chef Service branch of my business took off. Working for her is what made me realize how much I enjoy cooking for others, not solely providing recipes.

I've gotten to know and feed so many wonderful people in the last couple of years. A working day cooking for others fuels my culinary creativity and happiness, and I think my clients can feel the love, care, and attention to detail that I deliver week after week.
