Get To Know Ridgefield On January 8

The League of Women Voters of Ridgefield is holding a new installment of its educational program series for Ridgefielders to learn about their town government, Get To Know Your Town, on Tuesday, January 8.

First Selectman Rudy Marconi will give a “State of the Town” presentation and suffragist Alice Paul, who lived in Ridgefield for 30 years, will be honored.

This event is free and open to the public. It will take place in Town Hall, in the Lower Level Conference Room, starting at 10:30 am.  RSVP’s are not required.

Suffragist Alice Paul was one of the most influential women in America, leading the successful fight for women’s right to vote, and championing equal rights for women through most of the 20th century. The 2004 film Iron Jawed Angels tells the story of how Paul, with suffragist Lucy Burns, broke with old-guard suffragists to push for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution guaranteeing women’s voting rights, and the confrontational and dangerous tactics they used.

She also wrote the Equal Rights Amendment and worked tirelessly for its passage. Paul lived in Ridgefield from the 1940’s to the 1970’s, and she was inducted into the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame in 1994. The celebration of her achievements corresponds to her January 11 birthday.
