Meet the Candidates: Susan Baker for Ridgefield Inland Wetlands Board

Editor's note: HamletHub believes in democracy and we recently invited all Town of Ridgefield candidates to answer five questions, giving residents an opportunity to learn more about their candidacy, Town involvement, and reasons for seeking office. If you will be on the ballot on November 5, we'd love to hear from you! Please see the information on the bottom of this post regarding this Q&A opportunity.

Meet Susan Baker Candidate for Ridgefield Inland Wetlands Board

What office are you running for and why?

I am running for the Inland Wetlands Board. I worked on the project of creating an independent IWB because I felt that its work requires a focused approach that was not possible with a combined board. My 17-year experience on the Conservation Commission has given me the tools I will need to be an effective member.

What do you hope to accomplish should you be elected on November 5th? My goal will be to carefully review each application to ensure adherence to wetlands regulations and to be sure that best practices are used to protect our valuable water resources.

Tell me about your current involvement in Ridgefield

I have been a member (and sometimes chair) of the Conservation Commission for 17 years. Before that, I was involved as a core member of the Ridgefield Open Space Association. Preserving the town’s natural resources and features has been central to my activities.

Biggest crisis facing our Town?

I have lived here for over 40 years, and I believe the town has a good track record of solving issues that have arisen and assuring the safety of its citizens. Storm events have occasionally been fairly critical, but have been handled well by our town leaders. We, like the rest of the world, are facing the crisis of climate change, but the current issues going on in town are problems that we are more than capable of coming together to solve.

Name a few of your favorite books

So many books, so little time! I don’t think of them in terms of favorites, and I feel very lucky to be able to walk to Books on the Common from my house. I am currently reading Rules of Civility by Amor Towles, and since I commute, I also read recorded books from our fabulous library. Currently, The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See.
