Here at HamletHub in Ridgefield, we will introduce both the democratic and republican candidates.

Meet Carson Fincham, republican candidate Zoning Board of Appeals

Carson is an Intellectual Property Attorney and founding member of the only IP law firm in Ridgefield. He attended Pace University School of Law, where he received his Certificate in Environmental Law. He has a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering from UCONN with training in hydroelectric projects and specialized experience with suburban water drainage systems, including having designed the drainage for the Route 7 widening in Wilton in the early 2000’s.

As a member (and alternate) for the Ridgefield Zoning Board of Appeals since 2014, and as Chairman since November 2020, Carson has developed and exhibited valuable practical knowledge regarding land use issues here in Ridgefield. He moved to town in 1987, is a graduate of Ridgefield High School, volunteered his time to conduct trail maintenance in Town parks, and has been a member of the Ridgefield Action Committee for the Environment, where he spearheaded obtaining grant money to permit the Town to acquire its first Electric Vehicle (EV) and charging station. Carson is also the builder and owner of the 1st Energy Star certified residence in Ridgefield.

The ZBA is quite different from the Planning and Zoning Commission, as it does not have the authority to be involved with the most critical development issues facing the Town. The ZBA does not make the Zoning regulations or approve subdivisions, for example. Instead, the ZBA has more of an equitable role where it ensures that the Zoning regulations of the Town are applied to all residents in the same manner.

Why are you the right candidate for ZBA this year?

I have served on the ZBA since 2014 and I have been Chairman for the past year. As an attorney, I have a good understanding of the role of the ZBA and how variances have been historically handled in Town.

What do you hope to accomplish if elected?

I hope to continue the steady and predictable deliberations of the ZBA. Consistency in our decision making benefits the public by giving them an idea of how their case is likely to go before they spend their time and money to apply for a variance. Having been able to maintain a large core group of dedicated members that work well together to achieve the purpose of the ZBA helps us progress towards this goal, and I look forward to the opportunity to continue to be a part of the ZBA team.
