Bear Beware: Important Information from Ridgefield Conservation Commission

Bears in Ridgefield

There have been some bear sightings in Ridgefield over the past couple of weeks. The photo you see here was taken by a resident of Flat Rock Drive who recently spotted a bear in her backyard.

The Ridgefield Conservation Commission and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) would like to provide residents with important safety information.

Bears in natural settings normally leave an area once they have sensed a human. If you see a bear, enjoy it from a distance. Aggression by bears towards humans is exceptionally rare.

-DO make your presence known by making noise while hiking. Hike in groups. If you see a bear, make noise and wave your arms so the bear is aware of your presence. Appear larger. Put your arms over your head or if you have a backpack hold that over your head. If you are in a group gather together. Bears have poor eyesight. If the bear is aware of you and does not flee, talk to the bear in a calm voice and back away slowly.

-DO keep dogs on a short leash and under control. A roaming dog might be perceived as a threat to a bear or its cubs.

-DO back away slowly if you surprise a bear nearby.

-DON'T approach or try to get close to a bear to get a photo or video.

-DON'T run or climb a tree.

-DO be offensive if the bear approaches you. Make more noise, wave your arms, and throw objects at the bear. Black bears rarely attack humans.

-DON'T throw away food or food wrappers on the trail. Bears have a great sense of smell. Black bears are not predatory they are just looking for food.

If a bear is seen in your town or neighborhood, leave it alone. In most situations, if left alone and given an avenue for escape, the bear will usually wander back into more secluded areas. Often a bear will climb a tree to avoid people. A crowd of bystanders (and barking dogs) will only stress the bear.
