Young Sailors From the South Bronx Display Sailing Skills on Saturday, February 23, Noon – 3:00 PM at Beach Point Yacht Club (900 Rushmore Ave. Mamaroneck)
Teenaged and young-adult sailors from the South Bronx will join dozens of other sailors from across the Metropolitan-New York region for an afternoon of frostbite sailing and racing. In addition, there will be teenaged sailors from the Hudson River Community Sailing Program based in Manhattan, as well as adults from the Mamaroneck Frostbite Association taking part. The event marks the first time that Rocking the Boat members have participated in winter sailing and represents a big step forward for the organization’s three-year old sailing program. There will be limited media spots available on support boats for photographers/videographers wishing to record the action from the water.
Rocking the Boat empowers young people from the South Bronx through a variety of boat- and water-centered programs to develop the self-confidence set ambitious goals, and gain the skills necessary to achieve them. Students work together to build wooden boats; learn to row and sail; and restore local urban waterways, revitalizing their community while creating better lives for themselves, in line with the organization’s motto: “Kids don’t just build boats, boats build kids.”
