Westchester Weekend Guide- August 15-17

 

Does anyone else feel like Summer is almost over? Its that weird feeling you get towards the end of August, when back to school shopping is in full effect, day camps are winding down, and the sleep-away campers return home. Lets live in the moment and remember that Summer technically continues until September 22nd! This weather is absolutely fantastic and lets keep our fingers crossed that it continues. Maybe you're heading on vacation this weekend, or picking the kids up from sleepaway camp but if you're home, we have plenty of fun, family activities to keep you all entertained and busy. SO let's dive on in!

Screening Under the Stars- Movie "Epic"

Who doesn't love to watch a movie in the great outdoors? This Friday, August 15th you can head to Kensico Dam and enjoy this summer's "Lippolis Electric Screenings under the Stars" free outdoor movie! This featured animated adventure is, Epic (2013, PG-13). Gates open at 5 p.m. Entertainment begins at 6 p.m. Movie begins at sundown. Admission and parking are free. Moviegoers should bring blankets, folding chairs and a picnic. Refreshments will also be available for sale. In the event of rain, the movie will be canceled.

Summer Fun Science Club with Westchester Children's Museum

Westchester Children's Museum/ Museum Without Walls will be hosting their Summer Fun Science Club at the Rye Library every Friday from 3:30-5:30pm. Pre-registration is required. You can sign up in the Children's Room or call 914-231-3162. The focus for grades K - 2 is Archaeology (Digging for Clues) and for grades 3 - 5 - An EGG-citing Challenge (students design, test and re-test their ability to protect a falling egg from breaking). 

Cross County Friday Fundays

Looking for a fun, FREE activity for your kids this summer? Look no further than Friday Fun Days at the Cross County Shopping Center! At each event children under the age of 12 will enjoy an interactive show,
plus participate in an arts & crafts activity. This week's feature on Friday, August 15 is The Pop-Ups and Decorating Craft for all Ages! Baseball card show

The Westchester county center will be holding a baseball card show for the baseball fan in your house! This event will take place from Friday 11-7, Saturday 10-5 and Sunday 10-4. For more information about the show go to www.nyshows.org.

Jewish Heritage Celebration

Experience a variety of cultures from around the world this summer without even leaving Westchester County during the annual cultural heritage celebrations held in county parks. This week's cultural celebration will be focusing on the Jewish culture with the Jewish Music Festival, on August 17th from noon to 6 p.m. at the Kensico Dam Plaza in Valhalla. Festivals will be held rain or shine. Seating is informal; bring blankets or folding chairs for seating on the lawn.

LEGO® City comes to LEGOLAND® Discovery Center

Lego fans get ready! The Legoland Discovery center in Westchester presents LEGO® City Weekend, this weekend (Aug 16th and 17th)! There will be activities perfect for the whole family! Kids will be able to be a reporter for the Daily Brick and find hidden LEGO City stories in MINILAND that are newspaper headlines! There will also be chances to win a Family 4-Pack of Annual Passes. Kids can also add to Legoland's very own LEGO City with their own LEGO creations, help the Master Model Builder complete the LEGO City Mural, take the LEGO City Skyscraper Workshop and much more! Marvel Comics come to Life

If your family is anything like mine, there's a slight superhero obsession going on! Well lucky for you, or the kids, the Marvel Comics will be brought to life at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Greenburgh Nature Center

On Sunday, August 17 at 10AM find out how easy it is to do composting for the whole family! "There's gold in those leaves, grass clippings, weeds, and kitchen scraps! Come discover the magic of compost and learn how easy it can be to turn your yard and food waste into valuable fertilizer for your garden. Members $5, Non-members $8." Stamford Nature Center

A little further north, the Stamford Nature Center is also a hidden gem with a fun playground and all sorts of fun activities going on this Sunday!

-Animal Meet and Greet Sundays, June 22 - August 31, 3:30 pm

Stop by for a chance to meet one of our Overbrook Nature Center or Heckscher Farm animals up close! From goats to guinea pigs and lambs to leopard geckos, see which animals call the SM&NC home. Great for all ages! Program is approximately 15-20 minutes and will meet at the Outdoor Classroom by the Otter Pond. In inclement weather, meet at Overbrook Nature Center.

-Farmer's Market

The Farm Market will be located conveniently on the Meadow. New and additional vendors will offer a wider variety of fresh, local items. The Market will also feature a different food truck each week so you can enjoy lunch at one of our picnic tables by the Bendel Pond. We'll be selling our very own products from Heckscher Farm — fresh eggs, maple syrup and yarn. Each Sunday, activities for families will be led by one of our environmental educators.

-Market Madness Sundays- Sundays, June 22 - August 31, 10 am - 2 pm (no program 8/10)

Support local farmers and explore the SM&NC through hands-on activities and crafts! The Sunday Farm Market opens for the season on June 15 and will be the center of the Summer Sunday programs! Come for a self-guided craft on the Meadow, oxen demonstrations, and lunch with Bert & Edie, North American River Otters, each week.

At 11:30 am, "Follow Your Food" by learning where some of your favorite foods come from through live animal visits, cooking experiences, and take home plantings. Get an SM&NC Farm Journal and discover the "Mystery Food of the Week" by learning each week about an ingredient featured at the market. Get a stamp in your journal and use multi-stamped journals to win a prize. All programs will meet on the Meadow. Craft and oxen demo are weather permitting. Follow your Food will meet in Overbrook Nature Center in case of inclement weather. Otter feeding is rain or shine.

Westmoreland Sanctuary

It is time to put on your detective's hat! Join Westmoreland Sanctuary staff on a hike through the woods, August 16th at 10:00am as we try to discover what is out. We will try to unravel the mysteries that surround our natural world. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring plenty water to drink. $5 per person for non-members and free for members.

And on August 17th, you can participate in "Introduction To Hiking at 1:30pm. Many of the most important things to take when exploring the many places that we like and walk in the Hudson Valley are left at home. Join us as we take a casual walk on Westmoreland's summer trails and discuss the do's and don'ts of hiking in our area at different times of year. Family hiking will be addressed and types of equipment/gear will be on hand. All ages welcome. $5 for non-members."

Stepping Stones

-Mutt-i-grees

On Saturday, August 16 from 10:45 - 11:15AM at Stepping Stones Children's Museum in Norwalk, CT, your child can enjoy a special canine storytime and discussion followed by a visit from a shelter dog. Shelter dogs courtesy of P.A.W.S.

Free with museum admission. For children ages 4 and older. Children under 4 can meet the visiting dog at 11:05.

-Around the World: Performance Series – Surcari

Also on Saturday, August 16th from 2-3pm, your child can experience the culture of Chile without leaving the country! You and your child can watch Surcari perform, play their native instruments and discover music that blends South American traditions with modern language. Free with museum admission.

Ages 2 and older. Free with museum admission, but tickets required. Limited space on a first-come, first-served basis.

New York Renaissance Fair

On Saturdays, Sundays and Labor Day from Aug 2- Sept 21 from 10am-7pm, Travel back in time. The Faire takes you through Elizabethan England, set within the Majestic Groves of the Sterling Forest. You can even dress up or buy clothing appropriate for the Elizabethan period while you're there! There will be games, rides, arts, crafts, food, music and performances! Stones Barn Center

-Egg Collecting

At Stone Barns, and for the younger clientele (ages 4 & up), "Step into the shoes of a farmer and pitch in with the all-important job of collecting eggs. Head out to the egg-mobiles (mobile hen houses), learn how our hens enjoy pasture-based lives and take home a half-dozen farm-fresh eggs.

Important: All participants must wear closed-toed shoes and long pants for this program. Youth must be accompanied by at least one ticketed adult, and all people attending the program must buy a ticket. Each family or group takes home a half-dozen eggs."

There are two times available on Saturday and one Sunday. Tickets for this do sell out so be sure to get your tickets in advance. Saturday, Aug 16 from 11-11:45 or 12-12:45 and Aug 17 from 11-11:45. Prices are as follows: Member adult $10.80, adult $12.00, member youth $10.80, youth $12.00.

-Farm Tour

On Saturday August 16 (12-12:45 and 1:30-2:15) and Sunday August 17, from 12-12:45, you can join in on a family-friendly tour for ages 4 and up. Explore the farm and some of their favorite seasonal highlights. Join them for a walk around the farm to take a closer look at the animals that they're raising and the vegetables that they're growing!

Please note that all youth must be accompanied by a ticketed adult. Ticket prices are as follows: member adult $9.00, adult $10.00, member youth $9.00, youth $10.00.

Michael's Crafts

Michaels will also be holding a super fun kids crafting experience for the little ones on Saturday. Let your child's creativity bloom when they create a "Back to School Locker Pocket". Westchester Children's Museum

They're open this weekend and your kids can explore their creativity before the museum opens its doors!! Come on by and check out the KEVA planks and Build Your Own Rollercoaster exhibits from 12 to 3. This is part of the "Let's Build" Summer Exhibits. For more info click here!

Maritime Aquarium

At the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk, CT, the Lorakeets have arrived! From now - Labor Day, "step into a lush aviary to share a laugh, a squawk and maybe a cup of nectar with beautiful tropical birds that will sip food right out of your hands in "Lorikeets," our big fun special summer exhibit. Set in an aviary on our riverfront courtyard, the exhibit will feature more than 50 free-flying lorikeets, which are colorful medium-sized parrots native to the south Pacific. Entry into "Lorikeets" will be free with Aquarium admission. But purchase a $3 cup of nectar and the lorikeets may land on your hand, your shoulder, your arm or even your head to get at this sweet liquid. (For anyone with an aversion to close encounters with birds, viewing of the lorikeets will be possible from outside the aviary.) They also have their Jiggle a Jellyfish exhibit up and there is an International Children's Art Exhibit to explore. For more info click here.

Bruce Museums Extreme Habitats: Into the Deep Sea

From now until November 9th, you can check out this incredible exhibit! Explore the vast and extraordinary deep sea, the last frontier on this planet.

• Discover the extremophiles that form the foundation of a hydrothermal vent

• Witness the bizarre appearances and adaptations of deep-sea species

• Learn about the technology that makes deep-sea explorations possible

• Feel like you are in a deep-sea submersible as you look through view ports

The Bruce Museum has created highly accurate casts of deep-sea organisms created from molds on loan from the American Museum of Natural History.  To learn more click here 

Bronx Zoo

Sometime we forget that the Bronx Zoo is only about 20 minutes from Rye Brook. The Children's Zoo is currently closed for renovations but that doesn't mean you shouldn't go! The zoo has so much to offer and this weekend it has even more for the kids! Two new tortoises have just come to the zoo too! They are between 100 and 150 years old and weigh over 1000lbs between them!

-The Children's Museum of the Arts (CMA) Presents The Art of the Wild Recycled Bird Feeders Workshop on August 15 with a Crafts Activity on August 16-17 from 11 AM – 4 PM. This is appropriate for kids ages 5 and over. Young Artists will work with a CMA Teaching Artist, to create their very own decorative bird feeder and learn all about the American Goldfinch and the importance of using recyclable materials.

-Come jam with The Little Rockers Band in their original, upbeat show "Rock & Roll Zoo" on Aug 16 and 17, at theTerrace Café.  Times: 11:30am, 1:30pm and 2:30pm

-Join the award-winning "The Bossy Frog Band" as they mesmerize children and families with their banjo driven, costume character dancing, 100% interactive music concert. Band leader and certified music therapist, Jeffrey Friedberg MT-BC, LCAT, plays banjo and guitar and sings songs that get everyone from 2 – 100 years old singing and dancing!

Joining Jeffrey are the 6 foot tall costume character Bossy Frog, Monkey, hula-hooping fiddler Alice and Joe on bass. Their special Bronx Zoo show features songs about animals and nature including "The Bossy Frog Song", "Owl Song", "5 Little Monkeys", "Nature Party" and more! This will take place at Grizzly Corner on August 16th & 17th with showtimes at: 12:30pm, 2:00pm, and 3:30pm
