Somers lights Christmas Tree and Menorah

The Town of Somers Christian community and the Jewish community came together on the Town Square at the Elephant Hotel on December 2nd to bless and light the town's Christmas Tree and Menorah. Elected representatives joined the local community and blessed the crèche and tree at 4pm which was followed by the congregation of the Yorktown temple (Chabad of Yorktown) in blessing and lighting their Menorah at 6pm. Both groups were respectful and joyous in their respective solemn celebrations.

Somers Supervisor, Rick Morrissey addressed both groups as did Westchester County Legislator Michael Kaplowitz. Both praised each group and their resiliency in facing numerous hardships through their history and were honored to address the crowds. immediately following the short speeches the tree was lit as the crowd sang holiday carols. The Jewish community then held their ceremony at 6pm again the crowd was solemn and respectful but excited to celebrate their heritage. After the elected officials spoke Rabbi Yehuda led the crowd in traditional Hebrew blessings and prayer, then with the assistance of the Supervisor Morrissey and County Legislator Kaplowitz lit the menorah. He then led the crowd in singing jewish holiday songs.
