Black Bear Winery at Putnam County Wine & Food Fest

Interview with our newest participant, Black Bear Winery

Black Bear Winery is located on the Central New York Region, just North of Binghamton Off Rt. 12 at 248 County Road #1, Chenango Forks, NY 13746. They are opened year-round from Tuesday to Sunday, 12 to 6pm.

Tell me a bit about your background and how you became involved with Black Bear Winery?

We, Mark and Sandy Stacey, started this business 17 years ago because we were fruit growers and homebrewers. We do not use any grapes; everyone else does that. Black Bear specializes in wines fermented with super-fruits. We do a whole fruit fermentation, so we capture all the nutrients of those healthy fruits and enjoy drinking the health benefits. After all- we’re supposed to eat five fruits a day, right?

Do you produce your own wines?
This winery is truly a homespun operation. Not only do we produce our own wine, but we built our production facility, complete with a comfortable & unique tasting room. We started in 1995 by cutting down timber on our 100-acre farm to produce and mill the lumber for the building and wrap-around deck. The winery has been in full swing since October 2002.

Tell us about some of your products?
Black Bear Winery produces fruit wines, meads and hard cider with NY’s many fine fruits other than grapes. We offer a complete range: dry to sweet, and light to robust, each with a singular personality. Among our many flavors, are apple, raspberry, blueberry, cranberry, strawberry, black currant and dandelion.

What fun facts would you like to share with us?

We’ve won many medals in International Wine Competitions and folks appreciate tasting something unique and extraordinary. These wines are delicious with meals or sitting on the deck. Try the Cherry Currant with a spicy spiedie sandwich, the Plum Delicata with Asian foods or Black Mead with a pork roast. Hard ciders are a casual drink that’s perfect paired with snacks on the tailgate! And if you bring your growlers in, we can fill them for you.

Do You host events?
Black Bear hosts public events and private. We pair all kinds of foods with our wines, breads, girl scout cookies, ice cream, cheesecake, our special Amish cheeses. We have two events scheduled with live music this summer- a BBQ and an ice cream social, and of course wine slushies all summer long. We look forward to visiting with you!
