Westchester County Parks Events for January

Westchester County Department of Parks and Recreation has several exciting events planned  at County Parks this month. Below is a list of some of them. Please visit their web page for more information and events. 

SATURDAY, JAN. 25

Edith G. Read Wildlife Sanctuary, 1 Playland Park, Rye: (914) 967-8720

Invasive Vine Cutting Workday: 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Over time, invasive vines like porcelain berry, oriental bittersweet, and mile-a-minute can cause early demise and disappearance of native trees, shrubs and wildflowers. Loss of native host-specific plants for insects means migrating and nesting birds may not have enough insect food to feed their young during critical times of the year.

Backyard Sugaring: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Learn everything you need to know to start making your own maple syrup at home, including how to identify a sugar maple, and best practices for tapping and syrup production.

“Treasures of the Miller House:”11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

Enjoy a presentation about the collections, the family and the house. Registration required at (914) 428-1005.

Story Craft: 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Listen to the story “Over and Under the Snow” followed by a craft afterwards. Registration and a fee are required at (914) 864-7286.

 

Marshlands Conservancy, Route 1, Rye: (914) 835-4466

Volunteer Work Project: Inspecting Trails and Clearing Debris: 1 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Great for any type of service credit hours. Please bring work gloves. All other tools are provided.

Westchester Knicks v. Maine Red Claws: 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Winter Tree ID: 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.

Learn how to identify trees in winter using their structure, bark and other clues during a hike with naturalist Tait Johansson. 

 

Lasdon Park, Arboretum and Veterans Memorial, Route 35, Somers: (914) 864-7268

Tips for Indoor Growing: 2 p.m. – 3 p.m.

Learn how to create the right growing conditions for your indoor plants during winter.

Winter Adventures: Clay Making Make ‘n’ Take: 2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Create a clay pot from a variety of styles to take home with you.

 

MONDAY, JAN. 27

Croton Point Park, 1 Croton Point Ave., Croton-on-Hudson: (914) 862-5290

Fourth Monday Bird Walk: 8:30 a.m. – 10 a.m.

Bring binoculars and join the experts from Saw Mill River Audubon staff in the ball field parking lot. All welcome, beginners to experts.
