Sharing SPACE ~ Folk Music Traditions from America and Europe

Saturday, July 28th, 7:30pm performance, grounds open at 6:30 for picnicking and tours. Join SPACE on Ryder Farm for an outdoor performance from the Cultural Arts Coalition’s Concerts Around the Corner ensemble and special guests, Uncommon Ground. The performance will highlight folk music traditions from both America and Europe, the concert will include both classical and contemporary music, performed on the Ryder Farm bowling green. Clock Tower Grill’s popular food truck will have food available for purchase.

Robert Zubrycki and Rachel Handman, violin; Adria Benjamin, viola and Katherine Cherbas, cello, will perform folk music inspired classical works by Antonin Dvorak, Bela Bartok, Florence Price and the Danish String Quartet. Robert and Rachel are currently performing in the hit Broadway revival of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Carousel. These musicians also perform in many distinguished ensembles, including the American Symphony Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, New York City Chamber Orchestra, Stamford Symphony Orchestra, American Ballet Theater and Broadway orchestras.

Meet “Uncommon Ground”, a band that makes its musical home in the space in, around and between the great American roots styles of bluegrass, blues, jazz, and old-time music. Regarded by peers, fans and critics alike as some of the Hudson Valley’s finest acoustic musicians, violinist Rachel Handman, guitarist Mike Kobetitsch, mandolinist Wayne Fugate and double-bassist Phil Helm make up “Uncommon Ground”. The band has been performing together for years now and it shows ... they play together with spirit and synergy that simply must be heard to be believed. On Uncommon Ground’s musical landscape, virtually any type of music is fair game: from the Beatles to Bartok to Bill Monroe, with excursions into Latin, Jazz and Celtic and even Swedish music, this is a band that has something to offer every member of the listening audience. It’s all delivered in performances that are as warm and inviting as they are polished, never less than musically captivating, and always in a way that directly involves the audience in the thrill of musical discovery.

Now in its 5th year, Sharing SPACE is a performance series hosted by SPACE on Ryder Farm that invites the community to historic Ryder Farm for performances from neighboring Putnam County arts organizations and SPACE resident artists. Founded in 2011 by Emily Simoness and Susan Goodwillie, SPACE on Ryder Farm is a one-of-a-kind artist residency located on the grounds of a 223-year-old working organic farm in Putnam County, NY, just an hour north of New York City. SPACE creates an environment singular in its ability to invigorate artists and innovators and their work, and contributes to the sustainability and resourceful preservation of one of the oldest organic family farms on the East Coast. Through its fully-subsidized residency programs, spanning playwriting to filmmaking to social justice, SPACE has hosted over 1,200 residents since its founding, and has developed a reputation as an incubator for some of our culture’s most exciting and relevant creators. SPACE counts among its alumni Academy Award winners, Tony Award nominees and winners, Pulitzer Prize winners, Guggenheim fellows, Obie Award winners and MacArthur “Genius” Award recipients.
