  • Materials (PDF patterns above must be ready prior to program start):2 pieces of “pretty” woven (i.e. not stretchy) fabric cut to specifications. A pillowcase works great.
  • 1 piece of woven liner fabric cut to specifications. While you can use the same fabric as the “pretty” fabric, it will be easier to distinguish inside from outside of the mask at a glance if you use different fabric. Be sure to use a fabric that feels comfortable against your face.
  • 1 strip of an old T-shirt (or leggings, or similar) of approximately 40” in length by 1” in width. If you cannot cut a single length of 40”, it is alright to sew or tie multiple pieces together.
  • Basic sewing supplies (needle, thread, scissors, pins).
  • A safety pin or bobby pin or something else you can use to pull the T-shirt strip through the casing of the mask.
Fabric cutting specifications:
Please print the appropriate .pdf for your mask using the default scale and double check the scale before cutting your fabric.
Note that the child mask may only fit up to an 8-year old and the adult mask may only fit up to an average sized woman. If you wish to make a larger adult mask, cut the mask pattern piece along the longer center line (i.e. the 9.4” line of the pattern) and separate the two pieces by the desired amount before cutting the fabric. An additional ½” in height should be enough to fit an average sized man. When cutting the liner fabric, fold the short flaps (the 1.2” line of the pattern) under before cutting.

(Registration ends May 22)

In this one-hour class, you will learn how to sew a surgical-style pleated face mask. This particular mask has a pocket for an optional filter and it will fit over an N95 mask. This mask is secured to the face with four ties and therefore can provide a customized fit.

If you wish, you can send completed masks to Hope Mazzola- 27 Valley Pond Rd, Katonah NY 10536 for distribution to a local hospital or other facility in need.
  • Materials:One 10.5” x 8” piece of woven (not stretchy) fabric for the outside.
  • Two 10.5” x 6” pieces of fabric for the inside/pocket pieces. While you can use the same fabric as the outside fabric, it will be easier to distinguish the inside from the outside of the mask at a glance if you use different fabric. Be sure to use a fabric that feels comfortable against your face.
  • Four ties that have at least a small amount of elasticity of approximately 15” in length each. Some ties that have been known to work include: T-shirt or fleece strips, crochet chains, 3-chains of loops cut from the legs of tights, and of course bias tape.
  • Sewing supplies.
  • Iron.
  • Sewing Machine

You need these materials ready prior to program!!
